    Round (UFO) High Bay LED Lights
    Round high bay LED lights, often referred to as UFO high bay lights due to their disc-like shape, have evolved from traditional-style luminaires. Originally featuring a cylindrical heat sink, a top-mounted electrical box, and a large aluminum reflector, these lights have now transitioned to a low-profile, sleek design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
    The disc-shaped design is not merely for a modern look but serves a practical purpose. The board-style design of the LED module necessitates a low-profile heat sink. The circular heat sink maximizes surface area to effectively dissipate heat generated by the LED array, enhancing thermal management. Constructed from die-cast or cold-forged aluminum, the heat sink also doubles as the luminaire housing.
    The LED module consists of multiple LEDs mounted on a metal core printed circuit board (MCPCB), paired with a lens array to control the luminous flux and ensure a more uniform light distribution. This innovative design eliminates the need for bulky aluminum reflectors. The LED driver is placed in a separate aluminum enclosure or a thermally isolated compartment to optimize heat management and longevity.


    Linear High Bay LED Lights
    Linear high bay LED lights come in two categories: traditional style linear LED luminaires and integrated linear LED fixtures.


    Traditional Style Linear LED High Bays
    These luminaires mimic the footprint of traditional T5/T8 fluorescent fixtures, usually ranging from two to eight lamps. The housing is constructed from extruded aluminum or die-formed, cold-rolled steel. The light assembly includes lumen maintenance trays that mount linear LED strip modules, directing light at specific beam angles to meet various facility needs.


    Integrated Linear LED Fixtures
    These fixtures are designed primarily for racked/aisle environments, but they are also effective in open high bay areas. Featuring an extruded aluminum housing, they provide both mechanical strength and efficient heat sinking. The light assembly comprises one or more LED modules, depending on the fixture length. The modules contain an array of LEDs mounted on a rectangular circuit board, and a one-piece lens array regulates the light. The LED drivers are housed in a gear compartment that is integrated into the housing but thermally isolated from the light assembly to enhance performance and reliability.


    Modular High Bay LED Lights
    Modular high bay LED lights offer scalability in light output, versatility in light distribution, and flexibility in lighting design. These fixtures are composed of modular LED engines and externally mounted drivers, providing a highly customizable lighting solution.
    A modular LED engine is a self-contained LED system that is thermally managed, environmentally protected, and optically regulated. However, unlike other types, the power supply is not built into the LED module. Instead, it is powered by drivers located in a back-mounted gear box. The housing or heat sink is constructed from die-cast or extruded aluminum, similar to UFO or integrated linear high bay luminaires. This design enables easy scalability and adaptability to different lighting requirements.

    How to Choose UFO High Bay

     

    Understanding Lumen Output
    The lumen output of a UFO LED high bay light is a critical factor in determining its suitability for your space. Lumen output measures the total amount of visible light emitted by the fixture and is essential for achieving the desired illuminance in your environment. For spaces requiring detailed work, such as inspection areas, a higher lumen output ranging from 100-200 foot-candles (1,080-2,150 lux) is necessary. Conversely, general tasks in warehouses may only require 30-50 foot-candles (320-540 lux). It's important to select a fixture that provides sufficient brightness to meet the specific requirements of the tasks performed in the space.


    Assessing Energy Needs
    Energy efficiency is a significant consideration when choosing UFO LED lights. These fixtures are available in various wattage settings, which correlate with their lumen output. High-powered models, typically ranging from 40,000 to 50,000 lumens, are suitable for areas requiring intense illumination, such as sports arenas or large public venues. However, for smaller or less critical areas, opting for lights with lower lumens (4,000-20,000) can still provide adequate lighting while maximizing energy efficiency. The balance between wattage and lumen output will directly impact your energy consumption and operational costs.


    Considering Installation Height
    The installation height of UFO LED high bays plays a pivotal role in their performance. These lights are designed to function optimally at specific heights-lower wattage fixtures (80/100/120/150W) are ideal for ceiling heights of 12-20 feet, while higher wattage fixtures (180/200/220/240W) are better suited for heights of 20-35 feet. The correct installation height ensures that the light is distributed evenly across the intended area without causing glare or insufficient illumination. Additionally, the spacing between fixtures should be adjusted based on their beam angle and the height of installation to maintain uniform light coverage and prevent dark spots.


    Lighting Standard for Your Buildings (Industrial Area)
    If you have an area going to reform, below is an example of the illumination requirements.
    Retail Store: If you have a retail store, you need bright light to attract more customers. At a minimum, you need 500 lux on the ground to illuminate the retail store. The same applies to led high bay gym lighting.
    Workshop: For high-precision machining workshops, it is important to choose 500 lux so that the work environment for a worker could be improved. For ordinary machining workshops, generally choosing 300 lux can basically meet the needs of the work.
    Warehouse: In the case of the warehouse for transmission or storage, a light with 200 lux is normally ok. If the warehouse includes the work area, then 300lux is suitable for this area.


    Wattage and Lumens
    High bay LED lights come in different wattages, but the one you need to focus on is lumens. As LEDs become more efficient, they will have less and less wattage. You can easily choose a high bay light installation depending on the height. Different heights have different watts (lumen output). The following are examples.
    12-16 feet, This height is ideal for lights with 12,000 to 15,000 lumens. If we suggest the efficiency is 150lm/W, the wattage is from 80W to 100W.
    18-23 feet, This height is ideal for lights with 16,000 to 23,000 lumens. If we suggest the efficiency is 150lm/W, the wattage is from 120W to 150W.
    25-35 feet, This height is ideal for lights with 25,000 to 36,000 lumens. If we suggest the efficiency is 150lm/W, the wattage is from 160W to 240W.


    Lighting Distribution
    The above arrangement of lamps is based on the lighting distribution of 110°-120° (Type 5S), but this optics is not suitable for warehouse lighting with shelves. Because such warehouses often have long and narrow aisles, it will cause a lot of light to shine above the shelves if the 110° optics is still used. And these lightings are not necessary or useless. Therefore lighting distribution is also very important for high bay lights. As shown in the figure below, we list the applications of two common lighting distributions in shelf lighting. Obviously LED high bay lights with a rectangular spectrum are suitable for this type of lighting.


    Lighting Design Reference
    Once you've determined the wattage, spacing between lights, and lighting distribution, it's easy to know how many lights you need. The number of lights depends on the size of the space and the lighting requirements, and after confirming these two points, you can know how many high bay lights you will need. Of course, you can also create a lighting simulation to calculate how many fixtures you need.
